Best Practices for Fall Prevention in Long Term Care

Preventing falls in long term care is an important issue because older individuals greatly suffer from falls that may lead to sustained injuries and possible death in extreme situations. The purpose of this study was to find the best solutions to decrease the likelihood of falls, by analyzing textual material from various practices and programs used in long term care. The best practices for fall prevention in long term care were suggested using an input and output model for better understanding. The following recommendations were made to further prevent falls in long term care: shifting the focus to preventing falls instead of only reporting falls, improving strategic thinking within organizations, and implementing transparency on safety concerns related to falls through public reports and internal evaluation.
